Starting up a cleaning business in NZ

Sound the trumpets! We have started a new cleaning business on the Kapiti Coast, called:
Home PA. We’re a ‘Personal Assistant’ for your home!

‘Big deal’ you say. Anyone can start a cleaning business! Truth be known, we thought that too!

Everyone we spoke to said starting up a cleaning business would be a walk in the park. Wrong! We had no idea how much work it would take to start up a business in 2021. A few decades ago it might have been easier. You buy the cleaning equipment, supplies, create an add in the white pages, sprinkle a few adds in the local news rag, and presto you’re off to the races!

Flash forward to 2021. Do you have a website? Is it linked to your social media? Is your website’s SEO working well? Is your hosting service affordable? Is your domain name simple, and memorable? Does it have a .co.nz extension? Have you found a good web developer who can can build you a modern looking website? Is the website secure? The list goes on and on.

But wait, what? I shouldn’t have to know about IT! I don’t want to, I just want to focus on cleaning. Wrong again!

Then there’s the need to register a unique business name in NZ. How am I going to structure the company? Who will be the director of the company if it’s a husband and wife partnership. That one was easy, I immediately surrendered directorship duties to my wife. She does a much better job of running our home smoothly than me.
